Generic codes and conventions of hip-hop

Generic codes of hip-hop
  • Interactions with other models who will be playing the part of the lover such as: touching holding, deep stares into their eyes and common generic symbolic codes is when a male/female holds their partners chin and gazes into their eyes as an example.
  • Wide variety of two shots can be used to show the two people (Boy and Girl) together (highlights romanticism that couples share)
  • Tracking shots and performance shots of the artist towards their “lover” in the video is also generic and will convey their relationship to higher gravity, virtue and significance symbolic codes.
Generic conventions
  • Clothing will range from the stereotypical attire for the main hip-hop artist, his spouse in the video in order to fit into the conventions of the genre appropriately and aim to our main target audience well. However the costumes will also have a sense of casualness to them that can illustrate a less intimidating and more sophisticated/laid back feeling to the performers and the video on a whole, which will be useful to subverting the conventions because of the romantic tone that the video will possess.
  • Dark colours are often used to portray negative feelings of the artist (through the hip-hop genre and somewhat stereotypical portrayal of the artist from a Marxist perspective)
  • Items of the Mise-en-scene such as rings, bangles and necklaces /expensive jewellery are all generic for an hip-hop.

Coventions of a CD cover

Prelimanary posters

This poster is simply as I used the desaturated tool on the artist and put a lens flare effect at the background. The artist name, title and date of release are in front of the artist.

I desaturated the streets of London, used huge font for the artist name and I put the artrist in front of the of the name to make the artist stand out. The title and the date of release are located at the bottom of the poster.

Prelimanary CD back covers

For this back cover, I made the artist's skin black and white whilst leaving his clothes coloured. Behind the artist, I put a few black rectangular shapes to make the back cover look more interesting.

This back cover is fairly simple as I coloured the background black, put the artist name at the top behind the artist so the artist stands out, and put the title on the side of the cover. For the artist, I used a threshold effect to make the cover mysterious also the font that I used is a bit mysterious.
This back cover is contrasting to my other back covers because this one is brighter whereas the other back covers are really dark. The camera angle is effective because its like we audience are looking up to him. Similarly, I used black and red just like the previous CD covers.

Prelimanary CD front covers

This front cover is very simple, I used an image of the artist and cropped him to make it show his face. I put the background black and using the burn tool, I burned the top part of his hat. For the artist name and title, I used some blending options to make it look more appealing and stand out. The disadvantage of this front cover is that the original image had trees, bushes and fences in the background, making it harder to crop around the artist.
This front cover is fairly simple as the background has a repetitive 'ST' throughout the front cover. I lowered the opacity by half so we can see the artist name and title clearly. For the name of the artist I made it look look more embossed.

I wanted to do a small experiment by doing some adjustments to the front cover. For example, the artist name, I gave it more texture and I sillouhetted the artist.
This front cover is also simple as I got the original image of the artist and cropped around his face and added a threshold effect. For the title of the CD cover, I used to colours (red and black) to make the the front cover stand out.

Once again, I did a small experiment, I put in a wind effect on the artist to make it more appealing.
